A few weeks ago I gave you a list of what I think are perfect albums, and earlier I did one on great TV shows. Well, I also have written one about some of my top books (or series of books).
- The Bible – God
- Redshirts – John Scalzi
- The Last Christian – David Gregory
- 14 – Peter Clines
- The Martian – Andy Weir
- The Themis Files – Sylvain Neuvel (Sleeping Giants book 1)
- The Disappearing Spoon – Sam Kean
As I have written before I like to read. I may not read a lot, but I do enjoy it. Here is the list of my favorite books. As you can see most of them are science fiction, and two are non-fiction. For those of you who are wondering, yes, the Bible is non-fiction. If you don’t believe that, that’s ok, it is your opinion, and you are allowed to be wrong.
These are all books I have read and most of them I have re-read at least once. Some I have read at least 6+ times: The Bible and 14. I keep coming back to them for different reasons. The Bible teaches me about God and therefore is a great book to keep in my mind and heart. And I am continually learning more and more each time I read it. The Disappearing Spoon is a fun ride about chemistry, and I don’t like chemistry, but it makes learning about the elements enjoyable.
The other books are all science fiction and are just really great reads. Redshirts is great because I grew up watching Star Trek and this was an unbelievably fun take on what could be happening in the world that was created by the writes of that show. John Scalzi hit all the right high points and fun points that the original series of Star Trek glossed over and made great fun of it. The Last Christian has an interesting take on what it means to be alive and whether or not we have a soul. It is told in a great science fiction way. How technology has affected, and is continuing to affect, how we live a humans and as Christians. 14 is a mystery wrapped in a book about getting to know your neighbors, oh and a building that is saving the Earth. The Martian became a huge success (after I had read it the first time) and even became a movie (the book was better). It is so well written that anyone can read it and enjoy what the story is trying to tell you about. The science in it is pretty spot on, and that makes reading it enjoyable for someone that knows at least some of the science going on. The Themis Files is a trilogy that is written in a very different way. It is done from an interview point of view almost. The story evolves well through the series.
Even though all these books have been out for a while I am not sure if I am going to write about each of them individually. I don’t want to spoil anything about any of them for you if you decide to read them yourself. If you like science fiction you really should consider these books as something to read. If you are looking for life giving fullness you should read the Bible. If you like or don’t like chemistry you should listen to The Disappearing Spoon.
