This is a short one since I want the following two days on the same post.
Got up the next day and headed to Phillip Island. This was a big day for “G” again. Phillip Island is known for having Fairy Penguins that visit the island every day. Fairy Penguins are the smallest variety of penguin and they are the only ones with blue feathers. Not bright blue, but blue nonetheless. The drive was good. There was some rain and we were concerned about there being rain that evening when we were going to be at the penguin parade. It cleared up by the time we got there, mostly, but it was windy and cold. So, we got all ready and headed out for the penguin parade. Check it out online it is a big deal. “B” had registered us for a special penguin guided talk and that allowed us to learn a little about the penguins and get a front row seat for the penguins. What happens is that you get to see the penguins come up from the sea onto the land, and then see them wander up to their burrows they have created. Due to it being winter and there was an exceptionally high tide we didn’t get to see too many penguins make it onto the shore. I think we saw 10 or 11 over 40 minutes. They tell us that in October/November there can be 5000 in that same time frame. It was fun to watch them try to get up on land and the surf would come in and drag them back out. We were cheering them on, it was fun to do. Then we headed to an area they call the penguin highway. This is the main drag where most of the penguins walk to get to their homes. We saw a lot more here (20+) and it was fun to watch them. It was a good day for us all, and “G” really enjoyed seeing more penguins, this time in the wild. We then went and had a nice Italian dinner. And for dessert we had a chocolate, hazelnut calzone with ice cream on it. It was tasty. Then to our little hotel room for the night.
