On top of everything else I did last weekend I also needed to get the garden prepared for our winter planting. The ladies are in charge of the actual planting, but I am in charge of getting the beds ready.
I had to do a few things this year that were a bit more than normal years. We had a preponderance of grass coming up in the garden beds so I took a shovel to all the boxes and dug down somewhat deep and tried to get as much of the grass out as I could. I hope I did well on that. The grass was starting to get a bit out of hand.
Then it was over to Lowes to get some more mulch to fill the beds up. We are making our own mulch, but it wasn’t quite ready yet, and there wasn’t nearly enough of it so I bought nine 50lb bags. Then I got home and had to lay it all out in the beds. It was long hot work, and I was tired.
Then it was time to get the watering reset. A number of our drip lines needed to be replaced after many years of use, and so I decided to replace all the drip lines that had built in emitters in them. I thought I could do a better job laying it out as well so that the beds would get better water coverage.
I think things are good now. I am fairly certain that next summer, after our summer garden has run its course, I will need to build all new boxes. These have been here for 11 years now I think (or pretty close), and the wood is starting to rot enough that the boxes are coming apart in places.
Boy I can’t wait for that job next summer…
