This year is a lot like the last few years for my family when it comes to Thanksgiving. On Wednesday we get together with my parents and my in-laws at my parent’s house for Thanksgiving dinner. We do this so that my family can then head up to our cabin afterwards for the long weekend. It works out really well.
This year dinner with the whole family went well. There was turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, a sweet potato/apple/cranberry dish my wife makes, rolls, green beans, and corn for dinner. I took my usual of corn, beans, mashed potatoes and turkey (along with some gravy). It was quite good. We sat around the table and enjoyed conversation as well. Wait, before dinner one of my daughters, “G”, played her piano recital piece for everyone. This was because the grandparents didn’t come out for the 1 piece during the recital (it was a 2 hour recital overall). She did a great job.
After dinner my father and I headed to the shop the fix a motorcycle bracket I had bend. Then it was back up to the house for dessert.
Dessert was chocolate pie (as always), lime/pear jello salad, peach cookies, and an apple cake my ladies made. I love chocolate pie, and it is a must for me at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but the apple cake was amazing. I really liked it and I decided to end with that instead o the pie. That is saying something big for me. I made sure to let them know I really liked the cake. I hope they know how much I liked it.
Then up to the cabin. The drive was quiet and easy. We finished listening to an audiobook, and then listened to music the rest of the way up.
Then on Thursday my wife prepared a Turkey for us to have that evening. The house smelled great most of the day. Although after a while the smell started getting to me. I don’t know what that was all about. The turkey was great as usual. “B” does a good job on her turkeys. We also have honeynut squash and carrots. The carrots were cooked with the turkey and that always makes them taste so good.
I did some bike riding each day and my wife did a 10km run one day. We went for some walks as a family which are always nice. We also took a drive to see an area where a whole section of road it fully done up in Christmas lights. Every single house gets in on the action. It is quite a sight to see.
It even snowed a tiny bit overnight one night. There was a light dusting on the ground in the morning and it was all gone within a few hours of the sun coming up, but it was nice to see some snow. (It did mean the bike ride that day was very cold and a bit wet).
We again got baked goods from our favorite bakery, Baked in Pinetop. We got cinnamon babka, some sticky buns, some scones, amazing maple-walnut muffins (they were amazing!), and bread (sourdough and honey-oat wheat). Alway a highlight of going up to the cabin.
It was a fun weekend. I love getting away. It was relaxing. I know there is a lot work to do when I get home (cars, school, life and more), but the 4 days at the cabin was a blast.
