Taking Pictures – Waterfalls

This posting is all about one of the things I have always enjoyed taking pictures of: waterfalls. Specifically I am talking about taking pictures with my large format cameras.

Looking back through all my pictures over all the years I have been using a large format camera I have found that I quite often take a picture of a waterfall if there is one present. I really like waterfalls. I think it has to do with the power behind it. There is just something about hearing and seeing them that makes me say, “Wow!” and as a result if I think I can get a decent picture of it then I will take a picture of it. I tend to never take pictures with my camera if there are people all over the place. I want to get just the nature and beauty of whatever I am taking a picture of. As a result there are many times when I have been at a waterfall, and not taken a picture.

So here are some of my favorite pictures from over the years. I will do my best to let you know where the waterfall is and when the picture was taken. I don’t have any info on the taking of the pictures, because I didn’t keep very good records for most of my picture taking.

Here you have I think the first waterfall I ever took a picture of with a 4×5. It is Yosemite Falls. It is taken from above near Glacier Point. The year was 2005 and it was the first big hiking trip my wife and I did together.

The second is from Glacier Point toward half dome. You get to see Vernal and Nevada Falls as well.

Then in 2008 we went to Glacier and Yellowstone NP. Here are some waterfalls from that trip. At Glacier NP we get Red Rock Falls, Apikuni Falls, and the 4 falls at Avalanche Lake.

I really like this red rock falls picture. I had to wait about 30 minutes or more for people to get off the falls themselves. Every time I thought I was clear, someone else would walk out onto the falls and often sit down? I was so grumpy.

Then you get Yellowstone Falls. Not a huge fan of Yellowstone as a whole, but seeing the falls was dramatic. There is so much water coming off that.

Back to Yosemite in 2010 in the winter and I got this nice picture of Yosemite Falls from the base. The clouds were fun. I took a few pictures but this was my favorite.

In 2017 we had our big family trip and hit a number of parks. I got a number of good waterfall pictures on this trip.

Here is one from Mt. Rainer (I got a rainbow in the picture as well from the water spray). I was really hoping the rainbow was going to turn out, and I am happy that it did.

I enjoyed getting to this point on our hike in Rocky Mountain NP. It was a pleasant day. It isn’t much of a waterfall, mostly just some snow melt off, but still I thought it worked here.

And finally from that trip I have another one from Yosemite. I really like this picture. It is again from Glacier Point, but I focused on Vernal and Nevada Falls for this one.

For the last set of pictures they are all from my trip in 2018 to Iceland. This was an amazing trip and there were so many waterfalls. Everywhere we were there were waterfalls. I got these 4 great waterfall pictures.

This was an amazing hike and I loved the waterfall as it was in between the rocks and canyon it was digging out. We hiked all the way to the top and then down the river a ways, and then crossed through the river and down the other side (no path on the other side and we ended up scaling the side of the mountain at times (it was “fun” with all my camera gear on my back).

These next two are in the same area. I love the juxtaposition of the green on one side and the complete lack of green on the other side. It was raining pretty good this day, and I had to cover the camera with my coat and then lift it out of the way to get the picture.

This one looks like the giants causeway but upside down to me. The geometric rocks are “hanging” here and the waterfall is coming down through them. It was a great site.
