The New Canham Orchard

I mentioned last fall that the girls all wanted fruit tress again in our yard. At the time I was able to get a pear and a nectarine tree to put in, along with a raspberry and marionberry bush.

Well, the ground has thawed out and it is time for more trees to be planted. I went over to Adam’s Nursery again and while there I talked with Neil, one of the tree gurus, and he helped me figure out what to get. The plan was for cherry, plum, and something else. Well…

I ended up with 6 trees. I wasn’t sure they were all going to make it in the 4runner in one trip, but the person helping me leave told me he once got 5 in a Prius and wouldn’t let my 4runner be put the shame. I didn’t get a picture of that, but the guy did a great job getting them all in the car effectively and not damaging anything.

So what 6 trees you may be asking, well just wait, it is coming.

Then we had to figure out where to plant all the new trees. There were two ugly tress things in the front yard that I had recently taken out so 2 where going to go there. There was a large area near the nectarine tree for 2 more trees, and then the other 2 ended up on the opposite side of the backyard.

Here we go:

Here we have the front yard and 2 apple trees: A Honeycrisp (yeah) and McIntosh (“B” favorite)

The by the nectarine we now have: an Apricot and a Santa Rosa Plum (the same type of plum we had in Chandler), and I arranged them from right to left as – Nectarine, Apricot, Plum (it spells NAP).

Finally we have our 2 cherry trees: Rainer and Lapin

Yes they are planted very close to each other. That is on purpose. They are on the same root stock, and Neil told me that I can plant them very close to each other to save space in the yard. They will eventually grow into each other at the base and share their rootstock together.

I still need to paint the bottoms of them with white paint and get mulch to put around their bases, but I got the water lines all set up (for whenever our water gets turned back on for yards). I trimmed all of them like Neil told me to. The goal will be to keep them at 6 feet. Neil said that is a great way to do it. It makes it easier to cover and pick from once we start getting fruit (whenever that ends up happening).

So, the orchard begins everyone. The girls are all very happy. I hope they all take and thrive.
