Throwing this one in for fun.
Yesterday at Scottsdale Community College (SCC) I got to help out (again) with their Math-Science Field Day. This event brings in some of the brightest highschoolers from around the city to compete in a building project and math and science quiz competition. It helps promote SCC to the high schools from around the valley.
The first 90 minutes takes place outside as the students arrive and many faculty stand at tables and talk to them about what they teach and show things off. I showed off some fun physics things like a Van De Graf generator, an Arduino “magic eight ball”, a spinning wheel, lenses, and 3D printed objects (like a pinhole camera).
Every year the chemistry teachers have balloons filled with different gases and then light them on fire and see if the explode or not. I have always wanted to light one on fire, and this year I asked and they said yes. I got to light one balloon and there were 2 more attached to it. So, I got to do the big finale of the triple bang. Here is the picture of me doing it. It was pretty cool. Not as loud as just one balloon exploding, but still very fun!
Wow. That was a great experience. Thanks for passing it on. Have a great day. David Knapp
